Eye Bolt Tuners

Thinking about building a two-string bass and was wondering if anyone has tried building one with eye bolts as tuners?  If so, what size did you use and how were they "placed" on the headstock?

  • I use eye bolt tuners exclusively so far. Go to my page and look at my potos. I use 3/16 x 3" eye bolts with #10 - 24 wing nuts. If memory holds ture the washers are # 6 or 8. The problem is that the string cuts into the wood where it comes from the eye bolt to the string tree [guide]. I'm thinking of using copper or brass there to keep that from happening. I measure down from the end of the headstock one inch then down again 1 1/2 inch for each additional tuner. Drill the hole as close to the size of 3/16 as possible [the tighter the eye bolt the better. I often have to screw them in]. Drill through the neckstock widthwise. Tighten the nut as tight as it will go on the eye bolt, then put on a washer, insert it into the drilled hole, once through the hole put on another washer and the eing nut and tighten the washer to almost hand tight but not tight. bring the wire about an inch past the eye bolt and bend into a"V". insert the "V" through the eye bolt sothe excess wire stands streight up and the "V" touches the wood. wind the string clockwise which tightens the wing nut. Be sure the string loops around the "V" to hold the string to the wing nut. Once tuned just hand tighten the wing nut, do not over tighten. The string will stretch and things will have to "settle" into place, so you'll have to tune several times those first few days. After that it will hold tuning very well. Hope this helps.

    • I'm going with 1/4" x 3" eye bolts, seeing as bass strings are much larger than regular guitar strings.  The 3/16" x 3" looked just "too wimpy" to handle the strings.  I'll post pics when I'm finished. :)

    • Consider that the eyebolts have a slot at the bottom the string can slip through, you may need to solder that to prevent the string slipping through the slot on larger eyebolts. Have a great build!
