It is more to do with sensitivity than tone.
Disc - more sensitive and feedback at a lower volume. Easy to fit with a blob of adhesive.
Rod - need string contact through a protective layer for best result (under saddle in an electroacoustic guitar or incorporated into the bridge).

I'm curious about that as well, also what differences/advantages are there between sticks and discs? Does more surface allow for a broader tone range?
