How well does a rod pup work w/3 string cbg

I'm planning a 3 string dulcimer with a rod pup mounted in a wood base and a floating bridge. Ted Crocker makes one like this.

My main concern is that the 3 strings span about 1 3/8 in and the rod is much longer. Will this effect the tone or does that matter.

I also saw the CBGitty pup & preamp that looks very nice as well, if I were to drill my own base for the pup, how best is it to seal it in, silicone sealer or what? Thanks for any ideas Wyndham

I installed on on Vicky and at first it was weak sounding. I took the bridge apart and reworked it. I placed 3 shims under the rod to push it into the saddle and super glued them in place. I hear you can cut the rod down but I would keep it as long as possible to gain full range of sound. You could shape the saddle wide at the area that sits in the wood bridge ( the bottom) and center the three string area above kinda would look like a whale tail.
