How to wire this three-way switch?

Hi there, :-)

I'm a noob and I'm building my first CBG. Please bear with me if this issue sounds trivial to you.

I opted for a 2*Piezo & 2*Volume & 3-way switch & Jack and the wiring in this diagram here

Could someone explain a) the wiring from pot 1 to pot 2? Judging from the diagram it seems to me as if the same (red/hot) wire that connects pot 1&2 must also be connected to the first and third pin of the switch?

b) The Black (ground) wire that connects the piezos is soldered inbetween to the base of the pots and from there also to the left pin of the pots?

c) Below is the switch that I bought and that I find confusing because of the many pins (4 on the top and another four on the bottom?): Where to (in reference to the diagram above) do I solder what wire? The top left pin looks slightly different - I assume that this is the black/ground?

Any help would be much appreciated!

  • Your diagram is also wonky.  The outputs from the 2 volume pots do not join other than through the switch. The pots as drawn will also turn "backwards" ie. anti clockwise for louder.

None of those tabs on the switch go to earth.  If you want to earth the chassis of that switch the easiest way is solder the earth wire to a tab washer and put that between one of the mounting screws and the switch when you mount it.

The lug(s) on the switch you said looks different (topL, bottomR) are common or wipers. they connect with each of the other 3 on their side in turn.  You connect the outputs from the pots, one to each of these. 4 of the remaining lugs connect to the output jack hot, and 2 are unused.

    Follow the telecaster diagram.

  • hey ben,

that's just a telecaster switch.  you can wire it just like fender did/do (sometimes).

67tele.gifthe only difference with yours is that you have volume pots between the pickups and the switch, and the output from the switch goes straight to the jack.  the wiring on the switch is the same, and the switch as drawn is the same view as your photo.
