Grounding Strings

I am doing my first build and currently my Nut is a nail and my bridge is a piece of oak.  I am using half a pbass pickup, with the bridge being wood do I need to add a copper strip or something to the bridge so I can ground the strings?

  • Sounds good, I think I have some duct work strapping laying around the shop.

  • +1 to der groovemeister.  i usually find the tailpiece is the easiest spot to get a groundwire to.

with your nut being metal also, you would only need to connect the ground wire to one of your strings - the nut will conduct to the others, so you could use individual washers to hold the ball-ends, and solder a lead to one of them.

the metal plate idea does kill two birds with the one stone though, so to speak.

  • I always put a metal plate on the bottom of the wood end sticking out with small holes to put the strings thru. I think the strings will be pulled in the wood otherwise. I solder a wire to this plate and guide it in the box to the back of the vol pot.

  • I have about an inch of wood sticking out of the end of the box, was just planning on drilling holes for a string thru design so you answer is wood.  I guess I could put a metal plate or foil on the bottom of that and run a ground loop to it.

  • And the tailpiece?
