buzzing git, again, aaaggghhh, help,,

thought i'd re-vamp my 1st cbg and put  tone&vol control's on it, used new 500k pot's and a new capacitor, plugged it in and buzzz, if i toutch the string's it get's a little bit quieter, but not much, opened the box up to check all the wiring, every thing's connected up ok, but if i touch the wire from the volume pot to the jack socket (tip) it really get's loud, even tried 2 different amp's, same buzz, took the git & amp into the house from the garage, to make sure it was'nt some kind of interfearence in the garage, same buzz, dont know what to try next, any thought's, ???

  • Sounds like an earth problem.

The buzz you get from touching the hot wire between the tip of the jack and the volume pot centre lug is normal - this connects you directly to the input of the amp.

Have you tried Carverman's patented earth testing system?  Solder or clip a wire to the earth of the jack, then, with the guitar plugged in and live, touch the other end of the wire to all of the components that should be earthed. ie. the shells of both pots, the pickup cover if there is one, cases of switches.  Also touch it to the lug of the vol pot that is supposed to be earthed, and to the section of the tone circuit that is suposed to be earthed - the leg of the cap or the wiper of the tone pot depending on your layout.

If your buzz goes at some point you have found your non earthed earth.

If you have no luck, maybe jumper a lead direct from the pickups hot to the jack hot, to bypass all the circuitry and check it's not still the pup.

    happy hunting.
