Thanks Jim, I have never bought wood like this before. I'm going to have to look around here to see what's available locally.
Hey Mike, I've made 18 fiddles with cigar boxes and boxes I've made. I've used maple, walnut, cherry, padauk and oak. Oh yeah, mahogany also. Oak is the only one I didn't care much for mainly because the open grain never feels smooth on the hand no matter how much sanding I do. I've got pics of most of them on my page if you want to check them out.
Just began playing fiddle and have some cigar boxes I bought a while back to make cbg from but never did. I'm going to build a fiddle. I need to know what woods I can use for the neck other than the usual maple. Just looking aroundto see what I can find.
Mike
I found this relevant CBN blog entry which I thought I'd post here for both your and my benefit (as I want to build one some time).
Here's the link: Tips on Building a Cigar Box Violin.
I have started to build a viola sized instrument from a 1.75 liter Jack Danials bottle. I will post pics as I go. The design is coming out of my head as I go.
Just finished my second cb fiddle; I call it "Room 101 Limitado". It went together perfectly and plays beautifully. It is a 4/4 build, with hand-worked scroll volute on a custom length neck. I've posted pictures for those who might be curious.
Hey, I appreciate all the nice comments. Thanks.
Great work on your fiddle, Ron ... she's a beauty! I find also that new strings tend to need a break in period, they stretch until they're just right!
Ron, that came out really nice!
You obviously did your research and payed attention, avoiding many common first time fiddle pitfalls.
I wouldnt rule out tuner slippage, even if they are hard to turn. This is a common problem on all fiddle tuners in my experience. They just tend to be "sticky," hard to get into tune and hard to keep in tune by my reckoning. It could also be the tailpiece as Diane mentions, or the entire assembly, neck and top settling a bit may be a factor.
Either way, tune it up and practice some scales. Way cool peice of work!
