I'm too intimidated for now to try the traditional model, so I'll probably opt for a flat peghead scarf joined on and uke tuners thru to the front for now. Any better ideas?

Here is a question for a "real" luthier, or at least someone with luthier-like skills. How extreme does the angle of the headstock need to be on a fiddle? My "real" fiddle has a very extreme angle, but is that necessary or just convention?
I ask because Richard Sanabia has a great mini-tutorial on making tapered necks over in the Super Advanced CBG group, and I think I'll be using that approach on the fiddles on the bench. My original plan has a very angled head. Maybe not necessary?
