Ruby Amp

Hi I've just got a 1/2w Ruby amp , put it in a small cigarbox with a 3 1/2in speaker , what I want to do is add a output jack and a switch so I can use the internal speaker and have the option to use a bigger external speaker at the flick of a switch  , anyone help with a wiring diagram on how to do this ?.

 Thanks for reading .

  • Did you build the ruby? I want to build it or a similar one and see a bunch of vids about it online but not a real good vid on how to build. I can solder fine, but can't really read schematics and not tons of experience with breadboards or whatever the flat board with all the holes that you put it all on. Anyone have good instructions
    •  No the guy did a special deal as I need  2 or 3 amps he only charged me £5 to assemble the first one for me .,

Here's a link to his website scroll down to page to Ruby Cricket and download the PDF .

  • In my opinion, the best way to wire that would be to use a Switchcraft Model 12A jack. This is a 1/4" jack which has a built-in switch.

When nothing is plugged in, your amp output is connected to the speaker.

When you plug in your external speaker, the "Tip" connection is separated from the "Shunt" connection. Your internal speaker is disconnected, and the amp output is connected to your external speaker.

Lots of sources for these jacks on the internet:

Mouser Electronics (One of my favorite electronics parts sources!)

    Digi-Key Electronics (Another favorite!)

    Allied Electronics

    eBay

    Newark Element 14

    Jameco Electronics

    Edit:

CB Gitty has a similar jack... but, I can't tell if it's Switchcraft brand or not. Honestly, I wouldn't pay more for a non-Switchcraft jack!

Also... I just noticed your avatar pic... Cool Teles!

Thanks for the info Jim , I looked at that option , but as I said I need to know how to wire it up ?

       I only have 2 wires speaker + and -  .

    •  I've had a think about it and I think I've sussed it .

    • Actually the CB Gitty jacks are less (it's a 3-pack.)
