blew up a pcb / fried a chip

i had this karoake machine for 20 years , my lil bro had rescued it from the dumpster . we had used it on this tiny island for around a half a dozen jam sessions .

the volume pot got trashed , prolly in the trunk on the way home . i had saved this thing in our storage forever , thinking i would bring it back to life one day . it had 2 inputs , reverb with a hi lo off switch , a tone switch , pretty dang loud even with the 4 inch super cheapo speaker .

i had the TINY amp board removed ,  matched up a pot for the volume , found the timing resistor for the echo , removed it / matched a pot . i stopped for a second , reached for something on the table and an aligator clip slid under the board , shorting out the chip for only a second or two . i had already cut the speaker hole , mounted it , and put on a funky grille . i was maybe an hour away from wrapping it up , after spending all day monkeying around . it was feeding back @ like 30 percent in the new chassis with a nice 6 inch speaker . i was in denial for about 15 minutes , but man i have been beating myself up over this for days now .

what a drag . i dont think i am EVER going to find a board that small / loud with an echo . i really dug the switching for the echo and tone too . pots are rare around here , and i hate to buy em . so to make myself feel a  lil better i slapped together a larger amp in this ancient E.J. Korvette's speaker box i was saving .
