When you need an odd length wood screw.

it happens all the time. You need a screw or six to fasten the lid on the box, or want a screw to go almost but not quite through a piece, and the only ones you have are big honking screws twice as long as required. Try cutting off a screw, often as not you end up with a wood mangler that has no holding power once you force it into the pilot hole. It’s drill motor and dremel time. Chuck the screw point in a drill motor, and spin the screw while grinding away the screw at an angle with a dremel cutoff wheel. You end up with a nicely pointed screw with the threads intact, just as functional as if it was made to the required length. Beats a trip to the hardware store in hopes of finding just what you do need.

That would definitely re-do a screw tip.

What I usually do is screw the too long screw in as deep as I need it to in order to do a thread, remove it, grind it to size and screw it back in the hole... works most of the time but it's a pain to do. Your trick is much simpler...
