Anyone know what kind of wood the spacers, blocks and cover sheet veneer is that comes in some cigar boxes from the Dominican Republic or Nicaragua etc. ? Some of it seems quite hard but other pieces seem like a very soft wood. I want to think it is Mahogany or  Spanish Cedar something?

Thank you!

  • Yeah, I'm told it's some sort of red cedar.  I tend to keep bits of it for when I need a small piece of reinforcement but I also give lumps of it to a friend who owns a violin shop.  Their bow maker needs soft wood to wedge the hair into the frog on the bow and cedar is ideal.

  • Spanish cedar

    • Spanish cedar is a relative of mahogany I use them to reinforce the box corners and other braces. Not really hard enough for nuts or bridges.

  • Um, well I was going for the "concentrated energy to several small points for increased velocity" theory with this one! The piece is a cigar spacer and has a series of troughs routed into it that become arches when flipped over. Cut a recess in it to hold a rod piezo and a corian saddle. We will hear what happens soon I hope!

    • Sounds intriguing. Please post pics when you finish it. I'd love to check it out.

    • ha ha...increased velocity theory...love it.

  • Cool, thank you. I'm trying one of the harder/heavier pieces as a bridge. Hope it will transfer vibes well.

    • sure it will, especially if you keep it as long as possible...more surface contact should create good transfer of energy

  • Most of it is cedar...and done that way due to its resistance to rot and insects that otherwise would get inside & destroy the cigars.
