CHANGES COMING TO THE CIGAR BOX GUITAR MUSEUM IN NEW ALEXANDRIA, PA

From Shane Speal:

I'll be heading back to Speal's Tavern next week to start working on an overhaul of the Cigar Box Guitar Museum.  My goal is to:

  • add more instruments
  • completely re-arrange the display of the guitars
  • add new placards that feature CBG history
  • install a museum merchandise display (books, shirts, CBGs, more)
  • create a new microwbrew/craft beer menu
  • and most importantly, install museum lighting to the display.

The Robert Johnson Foundation has declared 2012 the "Year of the Blues" because it is Johnson's 100th birthday anniversary.  I want to see Speal's Tavern and the CBG Museum get caught up in the celebration and continue to grow as a deep blues Mecca. I've got a lot of work ahead in order to get the museum up to a perfecting standard I have in my heart.

I'll be arriving at Speal's Tavern on Friday night, January 20th to take part in an open stage blues jam.  If you're in the area, stop out and trade a few licks with us.  Then the next day, I will be working from sun up to sundown.  I promise to post follow up and pics.

If you sent an instrument, it will be displayed.  If you'd like one of your own CBGs in there, you can still donate one.  (I often suggest to builders that they donate an early prototype or other CBG that isn't in their main performing arsenal.)  All I ask is that you send a short 1-paragraph description of the guitar and/or your CBG company. *See below for an address

*If anyone wants to get their instrument in the museum, send it ASAP to:

  • you would be correct, Mr. Sleep.  Looking forward to pulling it off the wall and wailing on it again.  (Open blues jam next Friday night)

  • I think I spy one of my builds in that picture. :-)

  • I need to come and visit never been east of Ohio.

I made a few beers in my day too.

  • Jim,

Loves me some cloudy ales.  I'm getting them started with sampler cases & free tastings.  Eventually a well stocked cooler will be present.

As far as separating the museum out, that doesn't fit in with my plans.  A little over a year ago, my father took ownership of Speal's Tavern.  At the time, it was a near-dead corner pub with very few customers left.  We cleaned up the inside, hung the CBG Museum and then introduced live music for the very first time in the bar's 77 year history.  Since then, the place has become one of the top blues clubs in Western PA.  It's a tiny place, but it's one of those magical roadhouses you don't see anymore.

...the cigar box guitars saved the place.

I don't make any money from it.  Running museum is just my way of supporting my dad and help keep the family bar alive.

  • No price tags on them gits!  I swarr!!!

(The only ones for sale are the ones I build meself...so that I can re-invest the money to promote, improve and refine.)

  • lol...  yeah a fiendish plot to get some free cbgs!!!

seriously, the museum display looks ace and with the modifications your planning it's really gonna be a jaw dropper.

the kinda place i'd like to hang out in!
