Hi All,

I am going to experiment with converting a 6 string kids electric guitar into a 4 string. I got a Luna electric for $50 but the color is Pink! I would like to tone this into a more reddish tone. I suppose I could repaint but was wondering about other possible options. BTW, don't want to spend a lot of money. (I know Stew Mac sells toner spray)

Thought about making my own colored wax and or using shoe polish.

Open to ideas

Thanks,

Grandpa G

  • You can buy some acrylic paints at your local hobby store and mix with water to get the desired tint and rub on or use a sponge brush. Spray acrylic clear on top.

  • How doing something with Mod Podge? Cover it with something like wrapping paper, fabric, photos, etc. then clear coat with Mod Podge. Might work for everything but the neck.

There was a guitar I was considering purchasing on eBay that had sparkles glued or Mod Podged all over the body.

  • I actually have a similar issue at the moment with a 18.5" scale Hondo 6 string that is 1/2 a shade darker than safety blaze orange...

I'm going to strip it and stain it... I'm pretty sure the body is plywood on mine.

I heat gun works very well to strip modern finishes, you here it up and work it off with a putty knife. Then you just need to sand off the primer.

I've done this to 2 guitars and it worked out pretty well.
  • Some ideas - If you wanted it more rustic you could rough sand or wire brush the pink away.  If you wanted it nice you could finely sand or strip it away.  To cover it the cheapest thing would be a can of spraypaint I would think.  To darken it you could lightly burn it with a torch but this could end badly so be careful! If you consider the last one check out youtube for bringing out the grain with a torch.

I usually say to practice on some scrap but in your case you don't have much choice but to pick an approach and go for it!
