can be done both ways...this one, the top piece of maple is quite thick, so pup ears have short wood screws underneath to wood top. But screw holes on ears of pickup are clear enough to mount just like a typical single pole pup w/ machine screws and springs. What's most important is to be sure the hole for the pickup is clean, straight, and just a slight bit larger (a few hairs) to allow for adjustments without leaving an unsightly hole.

screws pass from top of box to underside, then springs onto screw underneath, then thread screws into pickup ears...the springs counter the pressure from tightening springs, which in turn, raises or lowers the pup

I have the springs...where are they placed ?
