It was one of those magical things that could only happen at the NAMM Musical Instrument Convention in California:  Sacred Steel legend, Robert Randolph passes by the booth of FunGuy Mojo Cigar Box Guitars and is smitten by their 2x4 lap steel (a design we first featured at Cigar Box Nation).

The Ontario CA based jam band, Groove Session was scheduled to provide a demonstration of FunGuy Mojo's instruments, and in fact was already in the middle of a jam when Randolph was passing.  The guys quickly set up the 2x4 lap steel and soon they were all laying down some serious grease.   Here's the video:

As with any star-struck builders, the guys at FunGuy Mojo really wanted to give the lap steel to Randolph after the jam.  However, they had just sold that very lap steel to Bill Nershi of the iconic band, The String Cheese Incident!  (Pictured: right)

In addition to all this, FunGuy Mojo sponsored a concert at the NAMM event with the all-cigar-box-guitar band, The FunGuy Allstars.  (See a Facebook video of their performance here.)

BUILD YOUR OWN 2X4 LAP STEEL

This is one of the easiest homemade guitars I've ever built, and it took me only an hour to make.

This lap steel was made from an extra 2x4 I had in my shed, with just a few saw cuts to the wood. I even used a pre-wired acoustic sound hole pickup, so there was no wiring needed. Anybody can build this lap steel guitar!

The lap steel plays great, too. It's set up with a standard 23-inch scale, just like the store bought-lap steels! The whole thing feels great on your lap and looks absurdly cool.  >>Read more...

I think even Robert wondered if that riff couldn't just go on for days........

Those other cats weren't too shabby either!

Knock my socks off!  Great Job.  I am going to make 2x4 Lap Steel.  I've already made a short, 3 string guitrar, and am fixing to string a 2 string Base, soon.  Of course they are electric , as will be the Lap.

I'm new on this things people, then, what's the name of the percussion instrument that the bearded guy is hitting on the floor?

Bumbass

Bumper Stumper

Amish Fiddle

Thanks Shane!

Stumpf stick or Stumpf fiddle

Rhythm stick, devils stick, devils fiddle.

Pogo fiddle

Highly varied, home made and common in jug bands, gypsy bands, even perhaps Vaudeville etc.
