I have two very nice DonTomas paper covered boxes. The bottom of one was peeling away, and upon inspection it is only a thin cedar veneer, over some sort of composite material. I drilled a hole in the top, and it's definitely not wood. It is hard though. Maybe a wood composite. Anyway... What is the likelihood of getting a good sound out of a non wood box? Has anyone any experience with these boxes? Especially Don Tomas brand? Should I just go get a real wood box?

  • Okay guys, thanks for the advice! My problem is that when I purchased these boxes at the cigar store, the owner told me they were wood! He even rapped his knuckles on the top and said, "See? Wood!"

They are pretty though... Which is one reason I bought them. So, I will continue my build with one of the Don Tomas boxes.

You learn something every day... If you're lucky.

    Thanks again!
  • Yup.  Build.   It does not have to be wood to be good.

  • Don Tomas boxes are made of hardboard (pressed cardboard). Many people like the sound. It's a deeper, more mellow sound. Often the paper covered boxes are beautiful and Don Tomas boxes are no exception! They sell well.
If you want to hear one, then go to my videos (I only have three) and see Bill Maakestad playing Amazing Grace on one.
  • I ve built many with non wood boxes they can sound pretty good acoustically .what ive found is u don't want the neck touching the lid all the way thru just a little at each end this helps them vibrate better .ive had paper covered boxes sound as good or better than some wood boxes but u never know with CBG's.to me its even cooler when a cardboard box sounds good it surprises a lot of people that a peice of cardboard can sound good
  • Marc,

Go ahead, build CBGs out of both of them! Some people have reported good tone from the cardboard boxes, others prefer wood, and many simply electrify the cardboard ones. I am one of those partial to wood. But don't count out the cardboard; awhile back, there was a thread that demonstrated that you could build a resonating chamber successfully out of papier mache'!
  • I cut into one of the Don Tomas boxes... It's made from cardboard. Hi-density, but still cardboard.

Is it worth making a CBG? Or should I just go get one made from wood?
