Low G

Hi everyone,

I am new to owning a CBT and to this group so hello to all my new friends.

I purchased my first cbg before attempting a build so I could get learning, I would like to tune my new cbg to GDG but the low G string will not tune to G before the strings snap, I have tried different gauges (48,46 & 44) all of which nearly get to the tuning but don't before breaking.

Can I have some advice please,

Many thanks,

Terry

  • I use the Pano Tuner app on my iPad and it’s very precise.

  • You are doubtless trying to tune an octave too high, and all wager that you are using a headstock tuner? Watch this, it might help.

  • Not sure why Terry but your replies are blank on my iPad????

  • are you tuning to the correct "g"?  you need a chromatic tuner, otherwise you could be trying to tune the string too high and break it.

  • Hi,

This is from the knowledge base and explains which strings to use.

Though checking the information the .044 or .046 wound strings should have been okay (based on a scale length of 25”).

Does your cigar box guitar have steep break angles over the bride or nut, or a tight notch the string runs through at the saddle or nut causing the string to snag and then break?

    • I use a tuning app, as well as a clip on tuner, which displays frequencies and I tune my low G to 99.6 Hz. I have read that low G should be 196Hz or thereabouts, and I can achieve that but then cannot tune high G without breaking strings.
