Hey guys, so I realized the mistakes I made with my last setup (neck too wide, wrong kind of box, etc.) and have corrected them...I now have a 1 ft long Cohiba box and a 1x2 piece of pine which I cut down to three and a half feet to give myself some wiggle room. I've already cut out the notch for the box lid (sharp chisels work wonders!) and my next step is to shape the headstock...what I'm wondering is, where do I cut the board to make the neck an acceptable length? I've got around 28 inches of extra board after the notch, what's a good length to make my neck?

P.S.-Being a shameless noobie and all, I'll probably have a few questions after this one. I'll just direct them here. Thanks so much for the help!

  • oh, right. It's semirealistic77, thanks.

  • okay, so I decided to go with Dan's suggestion of a 22" scale. After finding a place for my bridge (about three inches from the bottom of the 1 foot box) I'm left with about 15 and 3/4 inches worth of neck to the bridge after it comes out of the box. This seems a little small to me. If the experts think it's okay though I'll start carving my headstock.
  • Dan-I'd love to join the skype group, I'll figure out how to do that in a bit. A 22 inch scale sounds good, and you'd recommend an extra four-ish inches for the headstock? Cool, now I just have to figure out where to put my bridge...oh, and what to use for it...and what the proper bridge height is, since I'm thinking a little slice from a scrap board will do just fine.

  • Dan's the man. Can't go wrong.

  • A 22inch scale works pretty well. That is 22 inches from the place where the strings cross the nut to the place where the strings cross the bridge.
  • Dan-your video is helping, it's just taking a while to buffer...that's internet for ya out here in the boonies of MA. Kevin-I haven't found a place for the nut yet...I'm trying to determine where, with the approximately 28 inches of board I have left, to make the cut for the end of my headstock. This might be a dumb question, but is there any standard scale length? I want something that, as Dan says in his video, looks to be in proportion with a 1' box length.

Thank god that there are people who know what they're doing with this process. Again, thanks for the help guys.
