I would imagine that in a court of law, you would win. I looked on this whole thread as a wonderful example of community engineering. I will probably build one for myself at some point. As far as quality of sound goes, I imagine that your Matchbook sensor would be far superior than anything I could create. I personally have no desire to build and market any pickup.
Donald, what do you mean with «certainly looks like the pickup that we manufacture»? As far as I know, every player on the «Induction Pickup» game realized his implementation in a unique way.
By the way, the Matchbook looks like a commonly used flat humbucker pickup built by various builders on the CBG planet...
The thread starts with a photo of our Alumitone humbucker. That is why the statement.
As for commonly used flat humbucker, no it isn't , doesn't function like those and is patented. A lot of time was put into this project for both function and visual appeal for the CBG builder and player.
Thanks
You're right Donald, the discussion started with a photo of an Alumitone humbucker and the question «How is this done?», and the first comment was it be «technically a transformer», based on a review on a german forum. Decisive for the progress of the discussion were publications of Joseph J. Rogowski on http://music-electronics-forum.com/t5447/ and http://forum.ampage.org/forum.php?cmd=va&author=bbsailor which can be tracked back to experiments he did in the early seventies, as you did at Lace's, with microphone transformers.
We are only here to answer questions...no finger pointing. It is a cool design that a lot of folks like and still do not understand in comparison to all the pickups out there that are available to players. The more people know about it the better.
Have a good weekend.
Thanks David, you saved the maybe most important part of the three threads for us.
Donald hi,
I would like to clear some points about the «induction pickup» discussions on cigarboxnation:
1. The Matchbook pickup was presented with your advertising video by BeetleJuice! on January 21, 2017; from my unanswered messages to Jeff I got the impression you don't have any interest to sell these babies.
2. Crucial for the development of ideas were the writings of Joseph J. Rogowski and the practical decision to prototype with wall wart transformers. Your patent was studied at the beginning but had no impact on the progress of the discussion.
3. One reason for the lenght of the discussion was the fact, that the forum was moderated by the person with the least technical understanding but fighting for priority, and as time passed by, nobody knew no more what was already discussed in earlier posts, resulting in an extremely redundant discussion.
4. Joseph's first experiments with microphone transformers date from the early seventies, and according to your interview on premiumguitar, this too was Lace's starting point for the Alumitone development.
5. From Joseph's remarks about how Alumitone pickups are realized, it's clear that there's no DIY way to copy them: different from your Alumitones all discussed solutions have to rely on an impedance matching transformer for proper working.
6. Consider the «induction pickup» forum on cigarboxnation as kind of advertising for your Alumitone and Matchbook pickups you got for free: there are now some dozens of gals and guys around they understand and know to appreciate the design of these pickups. Some Matchbook pickups for us for free for reviews?
7. none of our designs or attempts used Aluminium as the primary loop. we all deferred to copper.
magnetic induction was discovered by Faraday in the early 1800's. you cant patent that.
Hi Tim:
We are here to answer questions. The original design by Lace, the Transensor has a copper primary. Yes, fundamental concepts of physics is not patentable. But the application and refinement for a musical stringed instrument was and still is. BTW all guitar pickups and microphones work on electromagnetic induction.
Thanks
