Hey all.  I'm thinking of making a Humbucker pickup.  Do I split the # of windings between the two separate pickeups?  In other words, if I normally do 3000 windings, would I put 1500 on one of the humbucker pickups and 1500 on the other?   So, for 4000 windings, it would be 2000 each and so on...????

  • Gibson PAF humbuckers have approximately 5000 winds per coil. Firebird pickups have approximately 4250 winds per coil.

If you normally do 3000 or 4000 winds per coil for a single coil, it's going to be a pretty wimpy sound. Strat pickups have about 8000 winds per coil.

So if you combine the two coils on the humbucker they actually have somewhat more winds than a single coil. The resistance in ohms will be higher too.

For the best sound, it's supposed to be better to make the winds on one coil a little different than the other coil, instead of both exactly the same. So something like 4750 on one coil and 5250 on the other coil, instead of 5000 and 5000.

    • ok.  Good to know.  Had no clue that the windings would be different count  on the two.

I've made several pickups with about 4000 windings.  They don't sound wimpy at all... infact they have very good sound and plenty of oomph for my 1 watt amp.  Maybe I'll do one with more windings to have a comparison...

I also heard too many windings was counterproductive too...

      Thanks.
