I am making a hubcap based 4 string instrument and need advice on the following.

1. Because of the dome on the hubcap, I need to add an extension onto the neck (see the mock-up photo) to run through the hubcap, the question is would a 6inch heel give sufficient strength?

2 What scale length and tuning would be best, I am thinking of a banjo, but would a standard guitar be best?

  • This is how I accommodated the dome on Hub cap.The heel has two long screws below the fingerboard to strengthen that short grain and joint306579652?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024

Thanks for the reply, I think I have resolved it. Your hubcap looks a lot nicer than mine. I had not thought of adding a box on the back, I like the idea, but think I will try without at first.

    • Hi, I like the outcome, where there's a will there's a way, as they say. Did you add sound holes? Cheers Taff
      • I think when I find some suitable chrome eyelets I'll put a sound hole in the side wall of the box, seemed to work well on a couple of license plate guitars where I didn't want to drill the plate

    • I like it. It looks good. The height is more dependent on whether or not it is supposed to be fret playable or slide only.

If its acoustic, you'll probably want some sort of sound hole to give it volume.

Thanks for the reply, the neck is made for Tulip (poplar), the fret board will be Sapele.  Since the original post, I have dropped the hubcap below the fretboard . I will look at relocating the bridge.
