Hello I am Happy Tom, it's great to be here. I just made a 3 stringer out of a pine shaped cigar box, and it sounds "awesome" !

I was wondering what everyone uses to prevent the strings from cutting into the wood? The strings are thru the neck on the bottom. I have seen some pictures of some CBG's that have some sort of chrome "gromets" that are installed in each string hole. Where is a good place to get those? Lowe's ?

 Thank You for your help.

  • Our pleasure. I use 1/8" also, but I used to use a slightly larger size, because that's what was in the junk drawer when I started building. When I ran out, I picked up 1/8", because that's what I grabbed.
  • Thank You both for your help... I have to pick some up. :-)
  • I use 1/8" mostly.

Thank You.. what "size" do you use? I see 1/8 and also 1/4...

  • Yep. Lowe's, Home Depot, Menard's, Ace.... Any hardware store should have them. What you're looking for are rivets. Just drill your string holes big enough, pop out that pin, and put it the rivet in the hole. That's just one method, though. (It's the one I use, and I highly recommend it, but it's not the only one.) I've seen other people that have put a fret right in front of the hole. Another popular method is to use a hinge as a tailpiece, with one side of the hinge attached to the guitar, and the strings running through the holes on the other side.
