I've got my neck and box cut to fit on this "neck to end" build. It's a fretted fingerboard and I'm going to cut the fretboard so it butts up to the box so I will be able to open the box if needed... The issue is that currently the top of the fret board will be even, if not below the surface of the box surface (sound board). So, will it be important to either put a shim between the neck and the fret board to raise it about 1/4 inch above the sound board - or shim the whole neck up from inside the boc and notch the top of the neck? Hope this makes sense. Hope you can see what I'm talking about in the photos.

  • I've built on this box before. I solved the problem by notching for the neck/fretboard, back to the top of the bevel on the top of the box. This effectively raised the fretboard almost 1/4 " which ought to be the easiest fix possible, if it leaves you room for the bridge.

  •  You need to notch more out of the neck inside the box , I build mine with the bottom of the finger board level with the top of the box lid  , I take off the thickness of the lid at the front and an extra few mm at the other end so it's tapered to give you some neck angle , you'll need to do this if your going to fit a mag pup , I thought we covered this in your other post ?

    • I ended up adding the shim under the neck inside the box. That way, it won't change the playing thickness of the neck. I think I'll have the fretboard height above the soundboard I need. I also have the notch cut so the lipstick mag pickup will have some adjustment. I'm still not clear on how the pickup gets installed with the springs that come with it so the screws adjust it. Since I'm not screwing it into the neck below (so the lid can be opened) I'm guessing I'll put some sort of spacers or washers to get the pickup height. Thoughts?

        • Looks like a couple of ways to do this.  The lipstick pup has supplied wood screws and yours looks like it's going into the bracket with machine screws.  I'll have to check and see if the bracket on the one I have is threaded for machine screws... If so,  I'll have to find some.  Going into the wood 'wings' on either side of the neck I think would defete the option of having the box open without removing the pup (my neck will be glued to the bottom - not the top of the box)

          • The tabs on the CB Gitty lipstick pup does have threads for a machine screw, but it doesn't come with the screws (only wood screws).  This must be metric - does anyone know what size screw this takes?

            • 306269780?profile=original I think this is a fit all small pickup screw .

              • just tried some old bridge height screws from Fender Strat and they fit.  I'll have to figure out if I can live with silver rather than matching gold and if they are the right length.  Thanks CK.

      •  Some thing else we've covered in your last post , lay the pup upside down on top of the lid so the bracket touches the lid , mark and drill the holes , push the screws through the holes , put a spring on to the screw from under the lid , now screw the screw into one the  bracket holes , do the same for the other one , it's the same as if your putting a pup to a scratch plate same as a Tele or Strat .

      • Brian,

Add little wing braces to the neck inside the box for the pup adjustment screws; see Dan Sleep's pic:
