Just got 18 pieces of this oak.... this is one sample 50 inches high, 3.5 wide and 13 across........ It (from my source) came from one of the oldest buildings in Philly and it was headed to the dumpster...... He threw it in his truck and called me..... I said hell YEA...... now what? It is VERY heavy........

If you clean it up and find cathedral grain (sparky's 2nd photo) then vertical slices lengthwise will give quartersawn pieces...plenty wide for great necks. If it shows the ray flecks, then it's probably white oak, so you could get a good price for it...maybe trade for figured maple.
Please don't cut that up, you can probably get a lot of money out of it for architectural uses or furniture. That big piece would make a fantastic rustic fireplace mantel. If all 18 are of a similar size you could probably sell off 16 of them and then trade 1 piece to a person with the proper equipment to process the final piece. Just my thoughts on it.

Tnx Regan I share your sentiments...... it would be a shame to cut up such large pieces... but I am at a loss on how to even start to find a buyer. Today I will cut off a few inches and see what the grain looks like and do some research
Maybe cut a 1 1/2" piece off and then further cut it into necks based on the grain. Also keep a chunk or two for a solid body guitar!
Run the plank though a table saw or planer and clean it up. The plank being so thick and wide you can treat it as uncut lumber and you can flat cut it or quartersaw it according to how the grain looks.

Just note even if the wood is very old and seems to be dry it still may need some time to dry before using after it is resawed.

The oak looks good. If you built a neck from a piece it would finish up nicely.
If you have a magnet or stud finder, run it over the other sides before cutting. You should be able to detect nail. Might be easier on your saw.
I think you have a nice piece of wood for some projects. If you can get any history on the building it came from, that would be a great part of the story to go along with your next build.
Tnx tom... the blade in my saw is pretty well shot... I have a new one ready to put on but now I think I will wait until I saw some of this... (unless it gets REAL bad). I would like to sell some of it as there is more than I will use for years to come..... I was thinking of selling it by the inch as a whole slab would be a fortune to ship.....

I would saw off a 3/4 ~ 1" thick piece that could be cut into 1 1/2 ~ 1 3/4" strips for necks.
The rest could be re-sawed into 1/4 ~ 3/8" planks to build boxes with. You'll need a band saw (or a friend with one), but the old wood should be worth the effort.
