Quick question: do you measure fret placement from the crown of the nut (I use machine bolts) or from the edge of the nut groove? Seems to me it should be from the crown. Any advice? Many thanks!

I use the threaded bolt or rod as a nut and yes the measurement is from the crown or top of the rounded part. Its were the string leaves the nut, or bolt in this case.
Me, edge of the fingerboard/nut groove. I would say it doesn't matter unless your nut us not cut right. thta inside face should be mostly vertical as it is.
But on a bolt, I would say the tangent where the string contacts the bolt. Thus center of the bolt.
