I posted about this guitar and a pic or two elsewhere, but here is the gallery of the whole build process.

I built this with my son Tor, it's our first build.  I have a few more in mind already :)

  • Wowza! Way to go! You really went all out for your first one. It looks fantastic! That's a great project to share with your son. I look forward to seeing more builds from you. Sounds like you caught the bug. :)

  • So since my youngest copies everything my oldest does, I'm going to make him a mini version.  I have a motorcycle plate off of an old bike of mine.  I'm going to make a 20" long scale with frets for pentatonic plus and one string so everything he plays will sound bluesy.  It's tough being 1 1/2 years old so I think he might have some blues in him.

  • Looks great!!  Excellent first build and especially rewarding project for father and son!  I too have a license plate build on my list.

  • Thanks for all the kind words.  Zero fret is the way to go!  It makes setting up the action a no brainer.  I tried to convince CB Gitty to sell me just one piece of jumbo fret wire with my order of medium, but I had to buy a whole bag in the end.  No matter, it will get used.

It was nice to build something together that took longer than an afternoon and didn't have instructions.  Lots of design choices to be made along the way, lots of lessons that mistakes happen and you can usually fix them pretty easily.

I've got a few more guitars planned already.  Another license plate guitar as a surprise gift for a friend, a simple guitar for myself.  I've also got a stand up bass made from an old dynamite box planned for my wife. That one will take a bit of planning.

    • Ducati Scotty quote;I've also got a stand up bass made from an old dynamite box planned for my wife"

Could you also make one of those for my ex-wife...reinstall the dynamite when finished? !!!

      • The box arrived.  It's old, smelly, and falling apart.  Not sure I can make this work...

Is that sounding even more like your ex? ;)

        • spot on lol

try rebuilding/restoring the box keeping it as original as possible, maybe use old pallet hardwoods sun aged for repair materials to put the box in usable condition

          • I plan to use some vintage wood at the edges and where it will be seen. I'll try to shore up the inside with new wood: square stock glued in the corners and thin plywood on the large faces. It should look the same from the outside but last a long time and be much more sturdy.

I'm also planning to leave it out on the covered porch for a while and hope the stink factor goes down.
  • Wow, that's your first?  Well done!  My first few were just terrible.

  • Love the zero fret design, glad you guys had fun, would love to hear how it sounds, license plate git is one of my future builds, about 5 down on my list.....list? hmmm when did that happen, so addicting isn't it! ;-)
