  • A quarter inch thick may be too thick to vibrate enough, but you could certainly give it a go. If it doesn't produce enough sound acoustically, you could always add a piezo and use an amp.

    I built a 2 string bass with a box that has a sliding lid. To do what I wanted to do, I had to gently remove one of the end panels, attach the neck and then nail the box end back on. It really didn't take long and resolved the issue of not having a lid that lifts open.

     

    As long as the lid is not too thick, it should sound great.
