Ever noticed that sawing a wooden hanger in half gives it a perfect shape for a ukulele neckpiece ?. I use three halves glued together, with a fretboard on top and voila!
As far as tuners go, chinese chopsticks are marvelous friction tuning pegs.

That's a great idea. And you could use them as a template for longer necks.
