Cigar Box Amp

I just finished a CBG amp made from a La Aurora box. I used the plans from Make-Digital.Com http://www.make-digital.com/make/vol09/?pg=107 It works just fine, I just need to cut down the length of the shaft on the pot, and put some decent knobs on the gain and volume controls. The ones I had did not fit right. I posted pics on the front page.

  • I'm looking at building something a bit more powerful. I've got a National Semi LM1876 Dual 20W Audio Amp ic and figured on coupling it with a 40W car stereo speaker (Walmart $33 for two). I've got a Wal Wort that is rated at 1.8A at 15VAC, so it should produce 21VDC. I'm think ing of running the two amps in bridge mode which should make for slightly better performance. Right now my biggest problem is finding a good heat sink since Radio Shack no longer carries them. I may have to wait till next week to hit the local electronics store (they will be closed by the time I get off work and aren't open on Saturday).

If you can build an amp with the LM386, you should be able to build one with this part as well.

One additional point about amps. The link shows a very small and cheap looking speaker on the construction page, which is fine if you are trying to build it for as little cost as possible. However a more costly speaker not only has a frequency response, but much higher efficency. I can't see the link to the picture of your amp so I don't know what kind of speaker you are using.

Effectivly, you can double or even quadruple the audio power out of the speaker by using a good quality audio speaker over a cheaper on. The ones I picked up are rated at 89dB/WM . I doubt that 3" speaker is rated at more than 74dB/WM. by the looks of it. A increase of 3dB/WM will amount to twice the power out of the speaker for the same drive level in.

Put your money in your speaker first, then build the amp.

  • That's a beautiful job. I wish I could get boxes like that around where I live....

This was also the first amp I made, and I still love it. It looks like you've even got a decent speaker attached--have you used it to push a bigger cabinet yet?

I was shocked (shocked!) at how good mine sounded when I plugged it into a simple 2 by 6.

Also, though you probably know this, you can get a little more headroom by running it off of a 12 volt wall-wart.

    Have fun with it!
