I got my order in from CB Gitty (great service and prices) One of the things was this pair of pickups

https://www.cbgitty.com/cubecart/pair-of-black-enclosed-4-pole-pickups-for-bass-or-cigar-box-guitar.html

They are joined together - can I use just one or do they need to be used as a pair?? and what are the consequences of separation?

Thanx

  • Hey jawbone, I quizzed Gitty on those pickups. As far as they know, they are each identical to the single 4 pole they sell. If so,it is a great deal as I put one in my first build of the year and it just screams. Each one should have an impedance of about 7.5 K Ohms if I remember correctly, which is pretty meaty.
    • Hey Dave!!! Where have you been??? Yeah, it seemed like a great price so I figured I couldn't go wrong. It will be interesting to see what each set up sounds like. So far I've been pairing one rod piezo along with one disk embedded in the thru neck (parallel)  sounz OK so far. But I want to experiment.

We gotta get together for coffee (or whatever) some time soon!!

      • Pick a time/ day. It probably works good for you if I go up as far as Loobies. My wife has gone north to see her parents, so I have time.
        • I'll have to check and see if Loobies is open yet - they've been renovating. I may be playing some harp with Curley Bridges on sunday - I'll let you know - it's at The Penalty Box on Bayview.

  • Cut the link wire - you now have 2 pickups.

    • Thanx John - I just had a chuckle at my wonderful use of the English language (this pickups) - had a bad day yesterday. My cat died.

Does it change much, using one instead of the two??

      • The two are reverse polarity magnetically and in how the coil is wound. This is so together they're a humbucker. Cutting into two you now have two single coil pickups, so you've lost the noise cancellation and also some grunt.. But what do you expect, that's how you got two from it..
These two piece bass pickups (a fender design) are actually two of Leo fenders electric mandolin pickups from '56, so it was first used the way you're using it although the mandocaster got a skinnier pickup more like a strat one in subsequent years
        • interesting info on those pickups-they go back further than I would have ever thought.

        • Thanx Kid - I think I'll leave them together for now and maybe try them singly and together to see the difference - darn - now I gotta build another guitar!! - stop the madness!!!!!!
