Amp Box Material

It looks like most small amps are put into wooden boxes whereas the guitars are all over he place. If I were to buy a small amp kit (such as the one offered by CB Gitty) - Is there a sound advantage to a wooden box over a standard hard paper cigar box?

Thanks for any tips.

  • I find 6.5" car stereo speakers work well..4ohm or 8, doesn't seem to matter much.  In fact, the cheaper and older the better...  as long as the paper cone is intact.

For rotten paper cones, I mix white glue with water (about 2:1 or 3:1, water :glue) and paint it on to preserve the paper...  seems to work well enough.

  • Ron gives a good answer.  If you want to see an array of cool amps not made from cigar boxes, check out Wes Carl or Maddog photos.

  • Not really. You do want to have something solid for the speaker frame to hold against, but you can make a perfectly good amp from a pasteboard cigar box. I use the little wooden Habanero 25 cigarillo boxes with the Gitty amp kit, because that's what my friends give me.
