Not that I didn't believe anyone here, but....

I talked to my son, a journeyman/forman induetrial electrician, and he fully agrees to go DC.

OK. Anyone want to but a variac?

But, I'm asking for help. Would someone skim Amazon/ebay for a 6/12v power supply that would work? I don't want to start throwing good money after bad and i am clueless on what to get. I want to build that wood rig, not one of those foam cutter hand-helds.

1. $'s is a consideration.
2. As everyone is saying, safety is an issue also.

I just don't have any idea what to get.

  • Since all you need is a low voltage DC supply, go buy anything that will work from the thrift store for a buck.,,

I work in the electronics industry by day.,and we throw out cheap power supplies all the time.,.,most any old 12 VDC wallwart would work.,.,or an old laptop supply.,.,the thrift store is usually full of junk.,.,most likely what you need is already laying around the house .,,.if you have the nitrile wire already.,.,.

    • Gus and Jerry...

Thanks for that I was starting to wonder if that was an option. Gonna try it.

I have a variable output one, DC, from 3-12v, 1amp. I'm a little unsure about 1 amp. Better to go with something under that?

      • The 1 amp is the capacity or limit of the supply. Hook it up and start with low voltage and see how it acts, increasing the voltage as needed. That wire is a pretty small load, so I would experiment

        • Copy that.

  • Hi, I haven't tried the method you are aiming for but I imagine the time saved would not be a whole lot, as you would still have to set out the spacing and get that devise to sit squarely in the correct spot.

But I do understand the thrill of the chase.

    Taff

    • "But I do understand the thrill of the chase."

      :-)

  • Is there some reason you didn't wan to use an automotive battery charger like in the video?

    • Mainly because of pushback from here...

  • seems like a lot of work to replace a Square & a Woodburner, just saying?

    • I thought the gizmo in the vid was pretty cool and well thought out.  Some folks just like making things  :)
