a 50-year old box and a question.

A friend's mom just gave me a box that she thinks is about 50 years old.  She had heard I started making guitars and thought I might like it.

 

The liner advertises cigars for $.15, so her time frame might be right. 

 

The liner raises the question...does the paper absolutely need to come out for the sound to project properly?

    I have flipped the lid on a few that had nice graphics on the underside.

    This one only has paper on the underside the lid and it is very tightly glued all the way around.  No design on the top of the box, but the paper graphic pretty nice looking.

    I think removing the paper from the underside of the lid makes the most difference, I have made them and removed it later and it did sound better. Sides and bottom, I don't know, I remove it if its loose, but glued on is to much trouble, Don is right.

    I would just shellac or varnish the interior. Some years ago I did a side by side test with removed and varnished and thought the difference if any wasn't worth the hassle removing the lining. Most of the sound projected is the soundboard in any case.
