A 30 in scale??

I have an experimental project in mind, and in order for it to work and look halfway decent, the neck will have to be long enough to accommodate a 30 inch scale. Are there any issues with making a CBG with a 30 inch scale that is not a bass? I just worry about getting it tuned so it plays halfway well.

  • Baritone guitar strings would give you the length you need. I used a set of them on my CB Bass. I built it with a 34" scale. The strings I used averaged about 39" long out of the pack. Just measure the strings before building.

you can also buy carbon fiber rods to put in the neck to make it stronger. one thing you might want to think about is strings. even a bariton is usualy only 27 inches or so at 30 inches depending on how its made standards strings might be a little short. i would double check befor begining
  • I did a 30" Bari that was an oak fingerboard on top of a poplar 1X2. Stable and great action on it. I didn't have issues with the strings being too short or anything.
  • LOVE them big throaty CBG;s - the discussion makes me wanna build one, again. My first build was at least 30 - probably closer to 36". But it was only cuz I didn;t know any better. Got it all done and found out standard strings out of a guitar pack weren't long enough to span the distance I had in mind from tuner to tail. I had to drop back and punt - and string it up through the face plate just to shorten the string length requirement. he - he.

  • Good point Tim, I never thought about the strings being too short. I will check that out. Thanks.

  • Cool. I was thinking about laminating several 1/4 x 2's together to make the neck stronger, then put a fingerboard on top of that. I think I have the layout and position of everything worked out, I just wasn't sure about have a scale that long, but I think this is going to work out fine. I will post pics when I get it done. I think the folks here will get a kick out of it.
  • Nah, It's easily doable. Just make sure you figure for the scale length on the frets/marks.
Only thing that might be a problem . The typical CBG neck ( 1x2, 3/4x1-1/2, whatever) will bow with tension.
I used a 2x2 and carved a neck to be strong enuff to withstand the tension.
