I dont own a cigar box guitar, but hope to very soon, in the mean time I have an old beat up Epiphone Riviera and im dropping it to 3 strings ( a somewhat Seasick Steve style) : )

I am a modest begginer and have a few questions

Which strings should i keep on it and in what position?

For my open string tuning, can any string be tuned to any note??

What kind of action should i be aiming for.

thanks

  • Lots of ways to do this.  Simple is good.  Keep the 5th, 4th and 3rd string.   (Remove the biggest and 2 smallest strings).

Standard tuning, they would have been ADG.   Lower the A to G for GDG tuning.

This is my fave and I think one of the two most common ways to tune a three string .  Go to the How To Play Section and I hope you have fun.

    • Thanks Uncle John, and where dya stand on string height??

      • depends on what style you want to play.  What ever the 6 string has for height should get you rolling.   But to be more specific, I do like a bit low.
