Hi,Tom,
Just a thought - feel free to tell me to "go away" if you think its stupid.
I once bought a cigar box on Ebay which turned out to be a bit too small & not the best of shapes to make a guitar & I turned it into quite a reasonable uke.
Or maybe a diddley bow?
Hi Tom, Yeah, I think you have it all covered. My preference would be for a single sound box with the middle section being cut back to look like the ribs of a boat. But hey, that's what is so inspiring about our preoccupation, if everyone were given the same material they would all come up with something different. Vive la difference!
Must get down to Lidl. Hope you've started it now! ;-{)
Hi BeeP
I'm a bit like a blind man in a casino with 250,000 to spend here-haven't got a clue where i'm going or what to do so, I can only contact you via this. Yes I agree, I think it could make a little cracker(barrel-puns all over the shop here)My thoughts are it would be around 26cm or 10 1/4" in old dosh, long - about 8cm thick with a top board on it. It could be two separate sound boxes each with a pickup or one large one. I agree about a goodly gap for resonance. I've got some mahog and sapele for a top but might explore other woodly options too-the worlds my lobster on that one I know! Wish i'd bought a few of them-they were on sale at Christmas but no doubt all gone now. Thinking also on the lines of poss. of one large sound hole, similar to the gold nugget uke style or maybe two down the middle if using two separate boxes. Not even on my drawing board yet-all in me daft 'ead at the mo.
Hi Tom, welcome aboard. I've just done a scale (sort of) sketch of your idea and I'm very envious! Great looking barrel and project. I'd be inclined to have a gap between the stick (neck) and the top of body and pick it up again under the bridge. This, hopefully, will give a little more resonance. Apart from that (and maybe a couple of cute little 'f' holes), I can't add anything. Looking forward to the progress.
Hello to all. First post here. I have a small wood 'barrel' which I bought, full of coffee beans from a Lidl store a while ago. It is 13cm high and about the same diameter and is roughly barrel shaped. The wood it is made of is very pale and similar to balsa wood although slightly harder(you can see where i'm going with this obviously) and is about 8mm thick at the moment. I am thinking of making some sort of stringed instrument from it(I know it wouldn't make a bad bongo either) and am going along the lines of splitting down the length of the barrel, joining the two pieces together to make roughly a guitar shape and work on from there ad libbing as I go. I will post a pic of it when my camera batts are recharged. I have made one previous 4 string cbg which was a success and I enjoy playing(will post pic of that too) Any help ideas and good old suggestions would be much appreciated.
As I live and breathe, THE Mr Chickenbone John! A pleasure to 'meet' you :) Being as new as I am I wouldn't know what to do with an adjustable bridge if it slapped me in the face, unfortunately, but that course does sound appealing! I'll have a word with my carer and see if it's doable. Needing a carer for my physical disability needs, would there be a charge for her to come along if she's not joining in?
A bit of product placement, but I don't do this sort of thing that often, so trust you good people don't mind. New in today, 3 string "hardtail" adjustable bridges...introductory offer -£7.50 FREE UK post and pack. We've got plenty in stock ready for immediate delivery.
And while I'm plugging things, I'm running my next learn to play Cigar Box Guitar workshop on Saturday 5th March in Bearwood, West Midlands. It will be a small group, so limited places. It's a great way to learn from scratch or improve your playing, plus it's an opportunity to meet up with some like minded people, so don't be shy...
well said ...
Lemmy of Motorhead has died of Cancer aged 70.
I'm not a massive fan of Motorhead, own a few cd's & vinyl . Always came across as a lucid & compassionate man. The world lost a Great British Eccentric yesterday . He was'nt religious ,so let's not get morbid or churchy or whatever .....
Killed By Death indeed !
Rest In Peace ya old bastard xx
