John Henry on Cigar Box Guitar

Here's a run at John Henry on my latest 3-string build. I put an overwound humbucker in it with a coil cut switch and it's in coil cut mode here.

  • Mike , you have developed "that" style I heard from the old timers as a kid . My Dad , who used to call it "chicken pickin" was born/raised on the "Delta" . The notes did't have a name , they just played the song . Although my Dad never made it big and could make my Moms ears bleed with his singing , he could sure make that old guitar talk . Mike "you" are doing the same thing . I was taught "it's just like talking" . You're doing it . All I gotta say is ,. "Thank You" .
  • Thanks again Keni. You do a VERY good job with your singing IMO. Your advice makes a lot of sense. Hadn't really thought of starting by matching tones of the major scale. It sure would open up a bunch more possibilities. Very true about Bob Dylan - - it never seemed to deter him in the least! See Ya!
  • Well, I don't consider myself a real vocalist either, but you can learn to sing just the same way you learned to play guitar well. I want to encourage you. Start by simply matching tones as you play the major scale. (You know the old do...re...mi...) Then take a real easy folk tune and "play and sing" the melody line. The guitar will help you. It is worth the effort. These songs were meant to be sung. This is what Jimi Hendrix said about Bob Dylan. "I thought, it takes a lot of guts to get up there and sing out of key, but then I got into his words". Enjoy
  • Thank you Keni. You have made made my day with your kind words! My singing, however, would lower the status of...well, everything known to man, LOL. I'll have to rely on talented folks like you to supply the vocals. Have a great evening.
  • You know this is the fourth music video I watched today and I have to put you in the same club with the rest of them. A great performance that justs continues to elevate the statis of the humble CBG. Real nice arrangement, But come on brother... sing it! When John Henry was a little baby...sitting on his Papa's knee... Thanks for sharing. Enjoy.
  • Thank You Bluesheart. I appreciate your kindness!
  • Thanks Knotlenny!
