Didgeridoo Practice

Well, what started out as a stomp block project ended up with what’s in this video. The song is just some riffing on some more homemade junk. Last week I made a couple of stomp blocks from hardwood flooring samples I got at Lowe’s, and piezo disks from some one-dollar open door alarms. One stomp block is a plain block, and the other has a hole drilled in it that contains bb’s for a tish sound. I looked on the Internet for samples of people playing stomp blocks and found a guy named Juzzie Smith playing a didiredoo, lap steel, stomp blocks, and a harmonica. Juzzie is a very talented musician and has a unique setup that got me thinking.Anyway, after watching Juzzie I had to build a cajon drum and a didgeridoo and give them a whirl. Got a kick drum pedal behind my right foot, playing it with my heel. The stomp box with the bb’s is under my left foot, plugged into a Fish ‘n Chips eq, then into a Peavey Bandit 112. This is a LOT of fun to play. Gotta learn some Juzzie Smith songs next. Enjoy! Check out Juzzie for a real treat...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4J23ysR3jXc

  • Thanks for the cool comment and kind words Silent Jim!  Going to practice on it in a few minutes after supper.

  • Thanks Diglydog!  That is one fun process. I got interested in the foot percussion thing watching Seasick Steve, Hollowbelly and Purgatory Hill.  Then I found Ben Prestage and lastly Juzzie Smith. Here's a cool interview with Juzzie if ur interested. He shows some basics.

  • Thank you Anders!  I wish my little video camera could capture all the sound.  That pile-o-junk sounds HUGE live. The video camera has audio limiting circuitry that tries to throttle it back.  I wrapped the camera up with rags to muffle it down enough to do this. Ah well, it's the challenge that makes it so much fun I reckon!

  • That's great co-ordination Mike. Amazing sound :-)

  • Thanks Slowpaw.  Nope gotta work on the CB next.  It looks like a challenge, but a worthwhile one... See Ya!

  • thank you South Paw! It sure is fun!

  • Thanks for the comment Chris! I wouldn't say i play it yet, but I sure do intend to work on it.  Check out Juzzie Smith if you haven't already.  He's got massive talent.

Cool idea about the Yucca. Gonna try that.

  • Thanks Ed!  It's too long to get in the bathroom... Sounds big in the stairwell, though - lol.

  • Glad you smiled Uncle John! It is a weird setup fer sure.

  • Thanks Slowhound!
