You might think: WTF?! - And you're right. This vid shows the trial works of self-engraving records. The audio tracks are cut into obsolete CDs on a cutting lathe built around a cigar box. Lowest-Fi ever, I hope to get the quality up during the next tests. The big challenge is the treble...

thanks guys, since I've seen that diy record cutting on youtube, I've got the bug. Some folks really get audible results by cutting, or better engraving, an audio groove into old CDs.

there are some cool examples:

... and so forth... interesting, hm?

You're building a gramaphone? A gramaphone? Elmar! You never cease to amaze me. I sometimes think your goal is to singlehandedly reinvent all of western technology.

Somebody really needs to do a documentary on you someday.

(Or at the very least, do a feature on you for Make: Magazine.) :-)

he he - vinyl sure does sound better than CD! (o:

seriously, it'll never sound any better as CD is a completely different material to vinyl - records have carbon in to reduce surface noise, and the grooves move and flex during playback when in contact with a stylus, CD plastic will not do this at all, good experiment though! (-:

it hardly plays forward ;-)

I cut around 40 CDs that hole night through... the next level is to master the audio-files by equalizing them and recording at half speed. Then, played at normal speed, the treble should get better.

There's some info on that diy record cutting on youtube, I would be pleased to share my experiences made so far.
