A little demo of my mostly complete DIY upright bass. I still have some aesthetic things to work on but it's functional.

THX a lot for the information. So it is more a kind of broom-stick half hidden in an old suitcase ;o)

Christoph Charlé:

On the inside it is just standard 2x2 pine building lumber. There is a peice running along the top just under the soundboard and the bottom almost touching the bottom. At the tail and neck attachments there's pine 2x4 blocks. That's really all there was to it.

The 2x2 along the top under the sound board is really so that it doesn't break through. The suitcase is not made of real sturdy wood, it was very very thin plywood and a cardboard backing. That said, it still does not bend the top at the bridge far enough down to touch the supports.

This is the only picture that I took of the process. I roughed out the neck with a hatchet which was fun and added to my overall lifetime man points.

Wade:

Yeah, flat is fine for me.

Bad Finger (Eric):

I can -not- get peizo's to work. I will explain in a new video.

Looks great! How did you build it? I can imagine it takes quite some measures to reinforce the back, sides and top of the suitcase to withstand the pressure / tension of the bass strings. Do you have any plans or pics of the build? would be really interesting.

That's awesome man! It doesn't look like you need the radius, but I have seen an upright build with a cut black pvc

pipe that was used for a curved fretboard(some food for thought). Hope you leave a vid once you get the pickups in

Great job, BTW.  Great sound too.  I'll have to look up the weed whacker strings.  We put steel student orchestral strings on our bass since my daughter uses it for practice at home and uses the school's upright for lessons and concerts.

On my bass, I used a cable piezo under the bridge and it works quite well.  My electric is mainly a beam with no box so I had to sandwich the cable between two pieces of leather.  I'm trying to learn the slap techniques.

Great idea. Some impressive woodworking there too. Did you carve that bridge with a chisel?
