Banjo Build Diary: Day 3 [Final Finishing]

I decided to build one of the American Banjo Kits from Carver Banjos. This is the third video in a series that will cover all the steps involved in building the banjo. During this episode, I do the final finishing which includes some light sanding and one more coat of oil.

You can buy this banjo kit here: https://carverbanjos.com/product/americana-banjo-kit/

There's a playlist that contains all the videos in this series here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwIixlr7C6KVG1LV-W4W8KxblRgMHnzG5

That wood grain is looking great.

It really looks nice John. Next is the drum head. That's a little more daunting.

Man, that is FAST drying.

Nice tips on finish.   I have some I should go back to and do that.  Oh, good idea from T-belly too.

That's a good tip. Thanks t-belly.

Coming on nicely mate. I use Danish oil a lot but found fine wire wool( steel wool) works better than sandpaper. I also found the oil never really sets hard so I mix half danish oil with a yacht varnish. I`ve found a 50/50 mix dries quickly and the shine and protection lasts. Also you can get away with 2 coats rather than the 4/5 coats of Danish! It may be worthwhile trying on a bit of old timber..... not that I`m saying you haven`t got a great finish!

Looking forward to the next installment

I hear ya Doug. I'm not really sure if the final coat does anything but regardless... it looks good.

You are right on the wood for the neck Kale! It is a beautiful piece of walnut. The head looks pretty good too. You are going to have a great looking banjo when you’re done!

I use to wet sand in additional coats of Danish oil, but the finish never seemed to really dry. I just use one coat now and it has worked pretty well for me; takes less time too! I’m not into sanding and finishing, but I do like the ease and looks of Danish Oil.
