Peizo's and capacitors.

Started this discussion. Last reply by White Raven Feb 22. 22 Replies

I am wondering if adding a capacitor like an orange drop to a simple piezo circuit will help with the tone?  I am working with an antique box, and I wan't to keep it simple. Just a piezo wired to a…Continue

string buzz

I have a new problem with an old reliable cbg. I built this resonator in the spring. excellent in every way. all of a sudden it has string buzz at the bridge. the bridge is made from the end of the…Continue

Exploring Chord shapes.

I have enjoyed searching around the site and reading posts about Chord Shapes. Lots of good, clear advice and diagrams. But I have not been able to find the chord shape for Bm with 4 string open G…Continue

Volumn pots

Started this discussion. Last reply by White Raven Jun 29, 2015. 4 Replies

I'm installing a pre wire mag pickup and just noticed a little tab on the pot that sticks up. With the tab in place I can't install it flush to the box. Can I safely cut it off?

"I wondered about whether it would short the jack, electricity follows the path of least resistance. I'm not very patient as an experimenter, but I might still go down this road a bit further. It would be easy to just pot the hell out of the…"

"Hi yes I use that set up. I'm not an electronics person, but I suspect that is a treble bypass system on the volume pot. It allows the high frequencies to be heard at low volumes. The resister allows some of the other lower frequencies through…"

"Most multimeters don't verify for capacitance, just resistance, continuity, power and amps. For the price of a capacitor, just change it and see. There will be a difference between a capacitor that is mounted in parallel (as in on the jack) and…"

"definitely possible. i will have to pick up a heat sink and a multimeter. then learn how to use it."

White Raven replied to White Raven's discussion Peizo's and capacitors.
"great advice. thanks. they might have been crap capacitors, I dont have a multimeter or know how to use one, so checking them might be a challenge. As for damaging them when soldering, I never thought of that. I didn't use a heat sink."

Taffy Evans replied to White Raven's discussion Peizo's and capacitors.
"Hi WR, if you want to keep it simple, I recon use the tone control on the amp, that way you have variable control of treble frequencies. Mounting the piezo element as suggested on here by others will give a more pleasing sound from the guitar.…"

Jerry Jordan replied to White Raven's discussion Peizo's and capacitors.
"Sounds like you had a bad cap. It was acting like a short circuit. I would try several other caps. A multimeter should help troubleshoot the problem."

White Raven replied to White Raven's discussion Peizo's and capacitors.
"Well, I made up a couple of piezo's direct wired to a jack and soldered a. 022 cap from the positive to the negative lugs. Good news is, there is absolutely no hum, buzz or feedback. Bad news is there is absolutely no sound. I tried both my…"

Paul Craig replied to White Raven's discussion Peizo's and capacitors.
"It helps to cover the top of the round piezo to cut out feedback. I usually attach the piezo on 2 layers of double sided tape, then put a layer across the top. That kills all feedback in that senario. Magnetic pickups usually have feedback problems…"

"I have done the trick with putting a low unit capacitor to the jack as described by Gitty and Glenn. I like the results and it is my preferred method when I use a piezo."

François replied to White Raven's discussion Peizo's and capacitors.
"Also putting it in series will still be different. You should make a wire with a piezo, a jack and some alligator clips to do some tests. You'll be surprised at how much a small or larger cap can change the sound."

Michael O. Sedore replied to White Raven's discussion Peizo's and capacitors.
"Easy way to mount piezo discs:  Lay down a circular bed of hot melt glue, allow to cool, place piezo on top and seal down the edges with more hot-melt. Minimizes extraneous surface noise."

They are a unique Art form when you create them, and then the music created with them is another form of art. It is also unique. Few people do this.

Hi White Raven. Thanks for the nice words. The edging on the headstock is simply a trim from a $ store plastic 3 ring binder. It's glued on and adds a little touch. I always varathane on top of any glue-ons for durability.
