Neck Width

On my 13th build and wondering why I  keep building 1&1/2 inch width necks for my 3-stringers.  I would rather narrow them at least a quarter inch.  Without any reinforcement would a more narrow…Continue

Banjo rings

Ikea has some nice 10 inch walnut bowls with flat sides.  A little pricy at $20 but they are probably tall enough to make two banjos if cut in half.  Made with 1/4 inch plywood but very sturdy and…Continue

Nuts and Bridges

I finished my first build and it sounds and plays great.  I used threaded rod for the nut and bridge but decided to change them out with something nicer.  Made new nut and bridge with 1/8 brass rod…Continue

Four string Pup's on three string CBG's

Started this discussion. Last reply by Wayfinder Mar 23, 2017. 21 Replies

I have a couple of 4-string pups and would like to use at least one on a 3-string build.  Should I angle the pup to keep the magnets closer or just center it on the strings and go with it?  Continue

"I never thought about the shape, thanks.  I've settled on a shorter 640 cm scale to make it easier to play 7th and minor chords  rather than the ones I  made at 25.5 inch.  I  just found some nice tight grain mahogany…"

"I agree with Kigar and I also use incorporate a extra heel piece to glue the through neck to so there's no way the neck can warp . My necks are made from Tassie oak 1" thick I have a endless supply of timber in my forest that I mill for…"

Kigar replied to Bob Johnston's discussion Neck Width
"The thickness is way more important than the width.  A good piece of hardwood with a nice straight grain should be fine. Also if you keep the shape closer to square it will be stiffer than a full "D" shape neck.  I'd say go…"

"All else being equal, yes a narrower neck would be more prone to bend.  But is the tension of a three stringer enough to do it?  I don't know.  Time to put on your lab coat and do some experimenting Bob... and let us know your…"

Easy song on three string recommendation

Posted on July 24, 2017 at 3:23pm 3 Comments

Trying to find an easy song for my grandson to learn on his six string I suggested Stars On The Water by Rodney Crowell because it has only two chords and a great tempo.   I'm a newbie trying to learn songs on the three string so I gave it a shot.  Open G and e-minor.  Very easy and now I don't want to play it on my six string anymore.
