Hey everyone,My old man has abunch of purple heart. Will it splinter too bad or could it make a good fingerboard or completed neck. I was thinking of making maple as a contrast for good color. Thanks for all ya'll do.
Thanks guys. The old man bought a ton of it years ago and still has a lot of pieces I think that may work out. Can't wait to see what else he has in his shop. Purple heart is so nice on a guitar.
Seasoned purple heart wood is extremely hard wood. I once made two beautiful canjoe instruments from it and it was like cutting steel. Nearly wore out my saw blades! Highly unlikely to splinter, I'd think, but hard to guide straight through the band saw without weaving. Would make gorgeous fingerboard and I wish I had a few large enough 1/4" thick boards to make fingerboards with. Working with it is similar to working with ebony wood. One of those canjoes I made, I hand carved a purple heart into the head stock, backed the whole instrumentt with curly maple down its full length, put a "Mash 4077th" can on as the resonator and donated it to a veterans org to auction off at a fund raiser. It brought $300 at auction!
Eric I haven't done it before but i do recall seeing some has either here or on the forum I say go heqad and give it ago purple heart will make a great finger board deffinitley
