Pizeo and/or Mini Humbucker

Hey CBG peeps!  I've got a question regarding pizeos vs. a pickup such as a Mini Humbucker.  I'm looking to achieve that raw North Mississippi sound and would like some input on what type of pickup is best for that. Also, if I were to buy a CBG with an existing pizeo, can something like a Mini Humbucker be added and would the two types work together. How does these two different pickup styles translate in sound quality. My exiting CBG has a pizeo which sounds good to me but I've never really heard a CBG with a Humbucker type pickup. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who can educate me on this area.

  • I have a old mostly hollow body guitar with 2 mini-humbuckers and 2 piezos. I wired them separate from each other and installed a stereo jack in my guitar. The cord has a stereo plug on one end and splits into 2 mono chords. I can choose to use either in one amp or play both through 2 amps at the same time.

Also have a slide guitar with a piezo and a full size humbucker wired to a 3-way switch that goes to one mono jack to one amp. You can use either piezo or pickup or both.

Both guitars work without preamps for the piezos, but the electronics could use some tweaking for better sound.

  • This should give you an idea of piezo/magnetic/both pickups, with and without a preamp (both piezo and magnetic pup signals are sent through the same preamp).

  • Yeah, try the A,D, and G strings out of the same set. I use the cheapest light or ultra light set I can find.

  • If you remember I lowered my action to a  constance 1/8" distance off of the fretboard.  I restrung my CBG with a Low G- Middle D - High G set from Gitty and the sound changed for the worst. I'm now trying to figure out with all the confusing info what are the best strings for me. I'm playing a acoustic/electric with a piezo. The Gitty strings I purchased and used to restring my CBG feel 'clunky' now when I play slide. I'm trying to determine if it's the new string to fretboard distance or if the change in strings has changed the sound and feel of my CBG. I'm therefore trying to once again restring to see if that improves the sound and feel.

  • Thanks Rick!  I'll check out some of those vids.  But have you ever heard of anyone adding a Mumbucker type pickup to a CBG with an existing piezo, if that is possible.

  • Hey Charly, I haven't tried that, but I'm surprised no one has chimed in that has.

  • Hey Charly, here's my take on the subject. I use acoustic/bronze strings with piezos, and steel with magnetic pickups. I like both, and they are different sounding and playing. If you want to see some good examples of mag pickups, go to CB Gitty's site, he has demo videos for a few of the pickups they sell.
