Book Report: Real Artists Don't Starve

No, this is not specifically CBG related, so feel free to move on.

In addition to my CBG hobby/addiction I have always had a passion for reading. I am finding this book to be quite interesting. Although I have no aspirations to be a 'real artist', I do find that I desire to create interesting roots instruments; many more than I need so I try to sell them. Some friends like them, buy them, or commission me to build for them, so I find myself selling art.

If you like the printed page, check this out. The author uses examples from media, art, music, writing, etc. It is not a formulaic 'how-to' but a way to think about money and art. I would enjoy hearing your thoughts if you pick it up.

I am a cigar box building former NY artist/professor who has taught at universities in New York, Europe, Japan, and India and have exhibited in major museums and galleries world wide.  The idea that one has to make money off their art is capitalist clap trap. Artists who are true artists ALWAYS find ways to survive- they wait tables, they drive cabs, they do what they have to do to get rid of that itch. The fact that Van Gogh didn't sell a painting in his lifetime has nothing to do with him being a great artist. Most great blues players had to scuffle to survive- or pick cotton for the man! Art and music and writing and creativity is driven by passion (as Freud understood).  Sometimes the MOST significant artists, thinkers, etc. are people nobody knows about. With due respect,I will pass on this book. The title is a provocation for yukkies (young upwardly mobile kreeps) who believe art made on computers in 5 minutes will make them international art stars. Sorry, it doesn't work that way.
