Tuning pegs/nut one in the same?

I built a neck without an angle headstock and noticed the strings went over the nut but was still tunable. Is there any reason the tuning peg can't be used as the nut?

I saw something in the newsletter about a BLING build off. It's probably too late for that one but when are the build offs? What are the rules?
