Advice about pick up installation on old tambourine banjo build.

I have an old tambourine I'm using to build a 3 or 4 stringer out of. I would like to install a pickup on it but am afraid to cut a hole in the top. Is this possible? Any suggestions? I don't want to use a piezo but may have to.

Extremely tight strings on my builds.

I am new to building these amazing CBGs. I really like building them, but I want them functional too. Most all of my builds, I have built abut 5 so far, have very tight strings when tuned to GDg. The strings are very very tight making it hard to cord
