String spacing on the 2 x 4 lap steel

Hey I got a lap steel kit from CB Gitty and am about to drill the holes below the bridge for the string feed.

Has anyone here put them together using the plans that come with the kit?

If so, should the string feeds be a bit unevenly spaced as the directions show? It would have the two highest strings a bit closer to each other. I've never played a lap steel regularly so not sure what's normal.

The directions show this spacing between strings from low to high

3/8, 3/8, 1/2, 1/2, 1/4

I feel inclined to ignore it and space them evenly, but thought I'd get some feedback here first.

  • Thanks for the replies. I will space them evenly and march forth. I did notice a few other typos in those instructions but it wasn't hard to understand the intention
  • Andy,

The instructions are incorrect (I pointed this out to Ben and the instructions are being revised) Measure 3/4" in from the edge, drill the first hole and then space the holes 3/8" apart on center.

  • I know he said that he did that bit quickly so I'm guessing it's not too important. I was planning on drilling mine equally spaced so I'd be interested in everyone's opinion too.
